SIX STEPS IN RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS

1. CONTACT

Prospects exist in every facet of campus life. Take the initiative to introduce yourself. If you never meet any potential rushees, then you won’t have any pledges.

2. CONVERSATION

Your main objective when talking to any potential rushee is simply to make a new friend. Naturally, show your genuine interest. A subtle, casual approach will be more effective in the end. Remember, it is YOUR job to sell not just the Fraternity, but fraternities in general. Find out about his ideas, concerns, and wants within the Greek System and the Fraternity. Tell him about why you joined and what you have gained. Sell him on the whole experience. Before letting him go, get him to make some sort of future commitment.

3. PURSUIT

If you expect any results, do not wait for him to make a move. A follow up on your part is necessary. The idea is to find ways to introduce him to the rest of the Chapter (little by little) so that he feels comfortable with all of the Brothers. Ask him to invite other friends. By joining now he should not only be comfortable with the prospect of joining DKE, but enthused by the whole idea.

4. RUSH

Make sure everyone at Rush knows the rushee’s name (name tags will help). Dale Carnegie once said, “The sweetest sound to a man is the sound of his own name by another individual.” Make sure that he has met as many of the Brothers as possible, and that he gets a ride home.

5. FOLLOW UP

Invite him to more formal rush events (sports, philanthropies, etc.) to ensure that his interest is maintained.

6.OFFER HIM A PLEDGE PIN

You have now not only increased the membership (and resources) of your Chapter, but have also made a good friend in the process.
