Due to a lapse in government funding, all United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) varsity sport competitions have been postponed/cancelled until further notice including the University of Rochester's Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 12, 2013. The lapse in funding has caused a deficit in coaches salaries and the travel budget for USMMA athletic teams.
The University of Rochester chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity alumni association has offered to pay for the USMMA football team to travel to Rochester, NY in order to prevent the University's homecoming football game from being cancelled. Robert Hartz, Beta Phi '90, spokesperson for the alumni association says, "Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity has been an integral part of the University of Rochester since its inception in 1856. We support all organizations on campus but in particular, we are very close to the athletic department and football program. It would be a shame to have the homecoming football game cancelled so that's why we are offering to help pay for the Merchant Marines football team to travel to the River Campus along with the coaches salaries." An inquiry has been placed with the USMMA.
