The 164th DKE Convention

July 30 - Aug. 3, 2008

Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort

Naples, Florida

For nearly two centuries, the DKE Convention has presented the opportunity for all of DKE -- her alumni from around the world, and her actives from North America -- to come together as one, to enjoy the breadth of this brotherhood, to learn and to celebrate what it means to be a Deke.

The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort will provide the setting for the 2008 Convention.  Programming for the five-day event is being planned now, and alumni presenters are being sought to complement the educational schedule.  Plan to be part of this every-other-year event, and sign up now.

Actives: every chapter of DKE is required to be represented at the convention by at least one delegate who will be in school full time during the 2008-09 school year.  Chapters not represented at convention will be fined the full $700 convention fee.  All chapter delegates who attend every session will earn a $100 scholarship.  Therefore, the convention fee will be $600 for those who  attend all sessions.

Active chapter members of DKE,

My name is Lin Hanson, and I am chair of the convention committee.  Attached is a scholarship application which needs to be completed by your representative, and returned to me at 216 W. Higgins Road , Park Ridge , IL 60068 by May 15, 2008 . The scholarship committee and I request that chapters do not apply for these scholarships unless there is a true need.   In order for a chapter’s delegates to be candidates for scholarships, they and their chapter must be in good standing with DKE International, with their dues and insurance fees paid for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Some chapters have stated that they are not in a position to fund their representatives to the convention at a cost of $700.  Fortunately, we have been reasonably successful in securing alumni assistance for scholarships.  Nonetheless, chapters ought to pay something.  Chapters applying for aid should assess $10 to each active member; a reasonable contribution could then be made toward the cost of sending a representative to the convention.  Delegates receive a $100 reimbursement for attending all educational sessions at the convention. This $100 combined with contributions from a chapter of 20 active members would have a yield of $300.  Thus, the maximum scholarship needed from alumni funds would be $400.

Many alumni have been very generous in contributing to the scholarship fund.  It is the responsibility of the active membership in each chapter to honor this generosity by giving all that it can.  Please do not apply for these funds without a legitimate financial need.  We wish to ensure that chapters/delegates with greater need are not being excluded.  The Constitutionally- mandated attendance of at least one chapter delegate from each chapter makes the convention more meaningful and successful.

In the Bonds,

Lin Hanson, O'59
