Beta of DKE

Chartered April 5, 1851 as

the first fraternity at the

University of North Carolina,

in Chapel Hill, North

Carolina, Beta was inactive

between 1861 and 1887,

and revived March 19, 1887.

During this period of

inactivity, a chapter at

Columbia University had

been given the name Beta

so the North Carolina

chapter was named Beta

Alpha until after the 1887

convention when the

Columbia chapter took the

name Gamma Beta.

New from the chapter (back to top)

October 20, 2007

Brothers,

The DKE house at UNC is alive and doing quite well. This year’s fall rush was led by three very determined rush chairs Evan Willingham (Raleigh), Bobby Cooper (Winston-Salem) and Nat Kluttz (Winston-Salem). In a total house effort we brought in the largest number, and strongest quality, of young men in recent memory at the University.

This year’s pledge class of 24 freshmen and one sophomore was the largest on campus. The class encompasses members from six different states and the District of Columbia.

The pledge process this year will be highlighted by community outreach as each brother and pledge will, in a joint effort, perform five hours of volunteer work at places such as Habitat for Humanity and Kidzu, Chapel Hill’s Children’s Museum.

New DKE officers for the 2007-08 year were elected September 8 and will remain in office until December, 2008. Juniors Nat Kluttz and Ty Peebles (Winston-Salem) are President and Vice President, with Kurt Brinner (Knoxville, TN) handling the chapter’s financial concerns as treasurer. Sophomore Marshall McNair (Bethesda, MD) is now taking on the role as secretary and fire marshal.

Our annual spaghetti dinner in October saw all the proceeds going to help two families within the Chapel Hill community whose husbands/fathers were killed in action in Iraq. Preparation for our spring Habitat 5K and DKE charity golf tournament also are underway. Spearheading this year’s philanthropy work are Quinn Cogdell (Fayetteville) and Pierce Sandwith (Nashville, TN).
Recently the 1851 award for distinguished alumni involvement was awarded to Dr. Surry Roberts ’62, whose love and devotion to Beta-DKE has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

The DKE house in Chapel Hill is located on 132 South Columbia Street, and we would love for any brother to stop by while visiting the University or Chapel Hill.

Sincerely,
Nat Kluttz ’09, president
Ty Peebles ’09, vice president
